We got a surprise this morning in the form of a new bull calf, Brycen. Brycen was born this morning from Chewbacca and Sophie. Brycen is a stocky little guy. Brycen is an unregistered pure blood Scottish Highland bull.
Say hello to our newest addition Bridget! Bridget was calved on 26 February. Bridget is the daughter of Chewbacca and Sweety. Bridget is an unregistered pure blood Scottish Highland heifer.
Part of our interest in the Highland cattle was their docile nature. However, one of the first cows we purchased, and is presently in our breeding stock, was wild. She put definition in the word. You could see the wild in her eyes. She would never let us near her and would run wild whenever we got too close. When she birthed her first calf at W-L, she charged me while we were walking nearby to determine the sex of her calf. We contemplated selling her as it is hard to market a breed as being docile when one is being naughty. Patiently we have offered her range cubes whenever we offer them to the others. Over time, she has finally taken offered cubes and now asks for them whenever we are out in the pasture. She will even follow us around. So, even if a highland is wild at the beginning, the breed is docile enough to be tamed with a little patience and perseverance.
Welcome to the interactive spot on the W-L Highland Ranch website. This will be where we chronicle
stories of our homesteading adventures that will hopefully be informative and fun. From time to time,
we will also share favorite recipes and tips and ideas for various things. The first few may be rough
while we enter the world of blogging as newbies so feel free to laugh at any and all mistakes we might
make while learning.
My journey into homesteading and natural living began as a child living on a farm without television or video games. I became a Registered Nurse in 1996. As the saying goes, 'You can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl.' Now I am married to a man who loves history and all things old who came from Anaheim, California, but always wanted to live on a ranch. Ron joined the Marine Corps in 1987 and then the Army in 1996. Ron's time in the military ended with him in Kansas where he decided it was home. We have 3 children; Gina, Chellie, And Theron.
